Does Church Still Matter?
Does Church still matter? Is Church still as relevant to us as it has been in the past?
On Friday 14th of March 2014, Joseph Khabbaz led the first Café Q discussion for 2014, covering this topic of relevance and Church.
Christians often seek to make their faith grow, but how do we achieve this?
After several surveys were conducted a list was complied including:
- Family and friends
- Relationship with Jesus
- Own beliefs and understanding
- Marriage or significant other
- God provided during hard times
Interestingly enough, Church was not listed. Just to clarify – people are saying that church is not included among the list of things that help to make their faith grow. But why is this? Church is the place where we go to be fed for the week. Shouldn’t it play a major role in the growth of our faith?
This could have something to do with the fact that we are just looking to have our needs met. People are dissatisfied with how churches attempt to meet their needs and choose their place of worship based on the entertainment value.
All that being said, do we still need church? The purpose of church is to question the status quo. If we are choosing our churches based on their entertainment value, are we really questioning the status quo? Entertainment might be well and good, but entertainment does not change lives – God does!
I met up with a friend the other day for lunch and he gave me a card for his Christian church, covering the various activities they have running etc. On this card it read that the purpose of this church “is to CONNECT people to Jesus and build them for eternity”. It’s good to have the entertainment and the social aspects of a church, but without the connection with Christ, is it all really worth it?
Church should be a place for transformation and be used to bolster us in our beliefs, causing our faith to grow so much that we can’t help but share it with others. After all, we have to come to Jesus in order to go for Jesus.
The definition of church is “the people”. “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them” – Matthew 18:20. We are the people and we should be aiming for that connection with Christ thought our churches.
The good news is, God hasn’t given up on the church and since we are the church, God hasn’t given up on us!
Church stands to change the world. Be world changers and go to make a difference!
